The inspiration for this painting came from racing a 16' Hobie Cat catamaran on Lake Michigan during a summer thunderstorm. It was my first time racing a sailboat and we were overtaken by a nasty storm with driving winds, 15' waves, and lightning flashing all over the place. What a rush it was!
My goal was to capture the power and chaos of the wind and water. I hope you like it.
I've always been fascinated by cubist painters. Since I first discovered the works of Picasso and Braque in high school, I felt like I understood what they were trying to say. I approached this painting with the same attitude. Taking the main forms of the subject and disassembling them, put them back together using a perspective. Image viewing an object from multiple sides at the same time. This painting looks great on gallery-wrapped canvas and as a framed paper print.
